Star Exemption

Homeowners must register for Basic STAR exemption by December 31, 2013

This year, New York State is requiring all homeowners to   register or re-register for the Basic STAR Tax Exemption.   The registration deadline is December 31, 2013 in   order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and thereafter. The registration is quick and easy, and will take most homeowners less than five minutes to complete.

You can register on the Tax Department’s Web site (www.tax.ny.gov/pit/property/star13/default.htm)   or by calling 518-457-2036.

The Basic STAR exemption saves most Glens Falls homeowners several hundred dollars per year on their school tax bill, the estimated exemption savings is $495 for the 2013-14 school year. This exemption is available on the primary residence of   homeowners with incomes under $500,000. Married couples with multiple residences are only eligible to receive one Basic STAR exemption.

The new registration requirement applies only to Basic STAR recipients; senior citizens receiving the Enhanced STAR exemption are not affected. In order to continue receiving Enhanced STAR, seniors must continue to apply annually or participate in the Income Verification Program.
